Family Group Conferencing

A Family Group Conference is a decision making process which empowers families to make decisions regarding the care and protection of children, or those at risk of neglect or abuse. They are a way of giving families the chance to get together to make the best plan possible for their children and young people. It is an ‘opt in’ process for families and is facilitated by an Independent Co-ordinator.

The term ‘family’ refers to those who are significant to the child and not just blood relatives. The family group meet together to hear the issues and focus on what the child needs,  The family can ask for information from children’s social care staff and other agencies who have relevant information so that they are able to make safe and realistic decisions for their children. The family can also find out what services could be available to support their plan. After hearing all the information the family group then have an opportunity to talk in private, make plans and decide how to resolve the situation.

The service is run by Devon County Council but is independent of the decision making processes to maintain this independence.
