Parents and Carers

This page contains information which will help you to understand what is safeguarding, who is responsible for keeping children safe and what will happen if professionals get involved with you and your family. There will also be useful contact numbers for organisations who work with parents and children.

Your job as a parent is one of the most difficult there is, it can be both challenging and rewarding.

Every family is different and there is no one, perfect way to bring up children. Good parenting involves caring for children’s basic needs, keeping them safe, showing warmth and love and providing the stimulation needed for their development and to help them achieve their potential, this needs to be provided within a stable environment where they experience consistent guidance and boundaries.

Parents need support from time to time. Asking for help is a sign of responsibility, not a parenting failure. It is often the way difficulties are handled that can make a difference to your children, both now and in the future.

We want to help you ensure that all children in Devon are:

  • Healthy
  • Happy
  • Safe
  • Achieve their best
  • Become responsible citizens.

It is hoped this page can offer some ideas and information to help you find your way through what can be a maze of issues and advice. It gives contacts and further information you can follow up when you are deciding how to deal with your worries and difficulties.
